Serving temperature and storing wine properly
The same bottle can taste very different depending on temperature and storage.
Approximate serving temperatures
- Sparkling: 6–10°C
- Light white: 8–12°C
- Full white / rosé: 10–13°C
- Light red: 13–16°C
- Full red: 16–18°C
A note for warm climates: European ‘room temperature’ is about 18°C — cooler than here. Chilling reds slightly before serving usually helps.
Storage principles
- Keep temperature stable; avoid sudden shifts
- Keep away from direct sunlight
- Store bottles on their side if cork-sealed
- Once opened, re-cork, chill, and finish within a few days
What is decanting?
Pouring wine into a wide vessel lets it breathe, helping some wines ‘open up’ and separating sediment. Not needed for every bottle.
