Read a wine label in five minutes

A label tells you almost everything about the bottle — if you know where to look.

A label can look complex, but a few key elements reveal what's inside quickly.

What to look for

  • Producer — often signals style and quality
  • Grape variety or region
  • Vintage — the harvest year
  • Alcohol by volume (ABV)
  • Appellation — the controlled area of origin

Old World vs New World labels

European (Old World) wines usually name the region; New World wines name the grape directly — easier for beginners.
