Read a wine label in five minutes
A label tells you almost everything about the bottle — if you know where to look.
A label can look complex, but a few key elements reveal what's inside quickly.
What to look for
- Producer — often signals style and quality
- Grape variety or region
- Vintage — the harvest year
- Alcohol by volume (ABV)
- Appellation — the controlled area of origin
Old World vs New World labels
European (Old World) wines usually name the region; New World wines name the grape directly — easier for beginners.
